It was France's turn to hold the World Cup. As ever an England penalty shootout
and exit were on the cards.
This was a memorable match, often best remembered for David Beckham's sending off.
It didn't take long for the goals to start. Argentina scored in the fourth minute thanks to a penalty from Gabriel Batistuta,
who had been brought down by David Seaman.
England responded with an Alan Shearer equaliser, through another penalty, before Michael Owen scored to give England the lead.
Unfortunately for England, Argentina drew level just before half-time when Javier Zanetti scored from a free-kick. And, at 2-2,
that was how the score remained for the rest of the match, including extra-time. Next, an England penalty shootout.
Both sides missed one penalty kick before David Batty's weak strike was easily saved by Roa.
