Wembley embarrassment continues for English
Multiplex, the Australian company 'building' England's Wembley stadium have reported that they will not complete their work until at least June 2007, a whole two years behind schedule.

However, a spokesman for the FA said "The FA remains confident that Wembley Stadium can be ready for [next] season's FA Cup final" in May 2007. It would seem the FA are not very good with dates.

Graham Taylor and co. explain why England will never lift a trophey
Bad news for England fans. Ex-England Manager, Graham Taylor, declares that the England team is not good enough to win any silverware for some time yet.

Taylor blames the self-interest of the English Premiership clubs.
"Do our clubs come first? Of course they do."
Similarly he believes the players are never adequately ready for internationals
"We never really properly prepare for international tournament football."

Damien Comolli, Spurs sporting director, reckons the English youth policy is failing.
"Over four years between the ages of 12 and 16 a French boy would receive 2,304 hours of training. That is twice as much as England - where you would be given 1,152 hours."
08 June 2006:
Rooney banned for two games
Wayne Rooney has been banned from playing in England's next two competive games. He will now miss the first two matches of the Euro 2008 qualifying stage.

After Rooney's stamping incident against Portugal, FIFA's disciplinary committee banned the England player for two competitive matches and fined him 5,000 Swiss francs. He will now miss matches against Andorra and FYR Macedonia. This should not matter too much as these should be easy games. Then again, playng against Northern Ireland and Belarus should have been easy.

England penalties: Crouch claims team was "tired"
Peter Crouch has come forward with his thoughts about why England lost on penalties.

Despite not having to take any shots himself Crouch has claimed to know the answer to why England lost the penalty shoot-out against Portugal. "I honestly felt exhaustion set in".

Is this a fair reason? We don't think so. England missed more penalties on July 2 than Germany have missed in all World Cups put together.

Beckham resigns as captain
With England's departure from the World Cup, David Beckham has decided to resign as England captiain.

Beckham has been considered a superb ambassador for English international football. However it is felt by many that it was definately time he went, and that his timing reflects this opinion and avoids him being stripped of the honour.

1 July 2006:
England are out!
England are out of the World Cup. Despite an unbeaten series of results prior to the quarter finals, the England team ran out of steam and are now on heading back to England.

The first ninety ended a goaless draw. In some ways England were lucky. Portugal, more than once threatened to take the lead, but failed on each time. Similarly England's chances all fell short. The suffering of David Beckham and the unnecessary antics of Rooney were to further curse England. Beckham was injured just after the second half began. Then Rooney stupidly stamped on Ricardo Carvalho, earning himself elimination from the game.

After a further 30 minutes of fruitless extra-time came the moment every Englishman dreads (and every Scotsman enjoys), a penalty shoot-out. To cut a long story short Frank Lampard, Steven Gerrard and Jamie Carragher all saw their efforts saved by Portuguese keeper, Ricardo, giving Portugal a nice 3-1 victory.

And England will be coming home....

Why Beckham was sick
German newspapers, Spiegel and Bild, are both speculating on why David Beckham was sick after scoring against Ecuador.

Despite the official explanation that Beckham was suffering from dehydration, possible reasons suggested for the Englans captain's vommitting include:
1. he was sick of his team's terrible performance
2. he was made sick to the stomach by his wife's astronomical credit card bills
3. he had been drinking shoddy English beer before the game.

Eriksson - Scolari clash beckons
Having beaten Ecuador and the Netherlands respectively, England and Portugal will face each other in the World Cup quarter finals. This will pit Sven Goran Eriksson against his great rival, Luiz Felipe Scolari.

This will be the third major tournament in a row that the two managers have faced each other. Scolari's Portugal defeated England on penalties in Euro 2004. He also led the Brazil team which put England out of World Cup 2002. England are obviously hoping Scolari doesn't continue this trend.

English fans unable to control their drinking or their fists
In what was described by some as the 'Battle of Stuttgart' England and German thugs rampaged, throwing bottles, chairs and punches.

Trouble started when hundreds of England fans began taunting their German rivals in the city's Castle Square. English yobs reportedly sang songs about World War II, threw model Spitfires and shouted racist slogans. Both sets of fans threw plastic chairs and bottles at each other.

English ref can't count
English referee Graham Poll looks set to be sent home early from the World Cup. FIFA will analyse his yellow-card blunder in the match between Australia and Croatia before deciding what action to take.

Poll gave Croatia player, Josip Simunic, three yellow cards, only sending him off on the third occasion. He also missed two obvious penalties for Australian, infuriating their coach Guus Hiddink. Luckily, the Croats were unable to capitalise on Simunic's red card, as any Croatian victory would have forced Australia to seek a deserved re-match.

England to face Equador in knock-out stage
England are held to draw by Sweden, but still take top position in their group allowing them to avoid Germany in the next stage.

After losing Owen to a knee injury early in the match, England twice took the lead, first with an oustanding lob from Joe Cole and then with a header from substitute Steven Gerrard in the 85th minute. Unfortunately, for them, the Swedes failed to admit defeat. Twice they found the back of the net, first with an easy goal from Allback then a disorganised England defence allowed a persistent Sweden push score a second, this time off the boot of Henrik Larsson.

England progress to next stage
Despite a shockingly average performance against Trinidad & Tobago, England have secured a place in the next stage of the World Cup.

Against the smallest footballing nation, the 'mighty' England struggled to score. Faced with a solid Trinidadian defence and outstanding goalkeeper, not to mention a few poor misses on England's part, it wasn't until the last 10 mnutes that England were able to put the ball in the net. Crouch and the Gerrard gave England the win they sorely wanted.

Trinidad & Tobago talks tough
Trinidad & Tobago foward Stern John claims his team could cause an upset when they play England on Thursday.

John said "We know the England game will be very tough but we ground out a result against Sweden and hopefully we can build on it".

Defender Brent Sancho added "No-one expected us to get a result against Sweden but we always believed in ourselves. Who knows what can happen now?"

Good day for England and Trinidad & Tobago
An unfortunate error by Paraguay puts England at the top of World Cup Group B.

Meanwhile Trinidad & Tobago hold Sweden to a 0-0 draw. Although Sweden looked the better team, T & T defence continually repelled all efforts by the Europeans. England could be in for a tough match on Thursday :-)
08 June 2006:
Eriksson set to risk Rooney
Sven Goran Eriksson may risk Wayne Rooney in England's match against Trinidad and Tobago. This conflicts with doctor's advice and an agreement with Manchester United, who agreed that it would be advisable to wait until the group stages to play Rooney. Such a move may enrage the vastly experienced manager, Alex Ferguson who is already at odds with the England coach over Rooney's recovery. Doctor's have advised a further assessment after the group stage to ensure Rooney was fit enough to play.

It is worth mentioning that Eriksson stands down as England manager at the end of the World Cup and has no further allegiance to England after that.

Channel 5 rate Archie Gemmills 1978 goal best UK World Cup strike
In a rare show of non-bias by the media Channel Five have rated Archie Gemmill's 1978 goal against the Netherlands in 1978 above all other British efforts.

Loved and respected by his countrymen, this outstandig effort by Gemmill was a shining light in an otherwise embarrassing World Cup for Scotland.

English efforts were all rated far below Gemmill's.

England crush Jamaica 6-0
In front of a capacity crowd at Old Trafford, England easily swept Jamaica aside with six goals. Frank Lampard opened the scoring after which the English easily netted another five including a hat-trick from Peter Crouch.

Shocking news! Doctors have looked at Wayne Rooney's foot. It's still broken and he'll still miss the first stage of Germany 2006.

England planning a victory parade!
Without so much as ball having been kicked, the FA are already planning a parade for a victorious England squad. The day in question will be July 11. Dubbed 'VG Day' (Victory in Germany Day - no rerference to the War, honest), this day of 'celebration' will supposedly be declared a British bank holiday as soon as Beckham lifts the World Cup. Celebrations are to end with the England team having tea with the Queen.

Rumour has it, Her Majesty will be in Balmoral.

8 May 2006:
Eriksson selects Walcott, but has never seen him play a match
England boss Sven-Goran Eriksson has picked Arsenal teenager Theo Walcott to play in the World Cup. Regardless of not having seen Walcott play a proper match, Sven is happy to include Walcott because "I've seen him perhaps three times in training" and "I saw him play 11 against 11 on a half pitch". Brazil are quaking in their boots.

Wayne Rooney Injured - World Cup place in doubt
Wayne Rooney may not be going to the World Cup. Rooney, arguably the best stiker in England, fractured a metatarsal bone in his right foot during the Manchester Utd - Chelsea game. Initial reports suggest he will not be fit in time for Germany 2006. The population of England are gutted! Scotland fans seem more upbeat.
